The Movement for Cultural Democracy

The event will explore the withering, yet all pervasive, neoliberal culture that’s strangling our communities and our individual and collective creativity – what kind of new cultural movement and programme for culture is needed to change this?

To challenge the dominance of narrow and elitist forms of culture the event will explore the steps needed to develop a more participatory and truly inclusive culture based around the idea of equality and cultural democracy. It will include workshops and discussion around class, decolonising our culture, the politics of marginalisation, poverty, cultural work and creative production, and alternatives to neoliberalism.

The day will be participatory and open to everyone with time and space for conversation and for people to contribute as they wish. It considers culture in the broadest sense of the word: as part of our everyday and whole way of life. With Nick Mahony and Stephen Pritchard.
